Travelling in Style – Compactly: An Interview with July co-founder Athan Didaskalou

They are no strangers to maximising small space at Melbourne-based label July – only, they do it with luggage rather than interiors. The brand’s beautifully designed luggage has become a travel essential for NTS founder Colin Chee, so we spoke with July co-founder Athan Didaskalou about how they got started and what it takes to design stylish and practical luggage.

Never Too Small

Athan Didaskalou

What attracted you to the world of luggage? Has travel always been a part of your lives?

Travel has always been a huge part of my life. My family comes from Greece and Singapore, so I’ve always travelled a lot between Melbourne, SE Asia and Europe. The idea for July came about when Rich and I noticed there weren't any good quality, beautiful suitcases at a good price point out there. We saw an opportunity to create something better and jumped at it.

Walking through the airport, one thing is obvious: there are the fashionistas and the utilitarians. Where do you think July fits into this spectrum? Can someone finally be both?

You can definitely be both. You shouldn't have to choose between looking stylish and having functional luggage. Our designs combine both style and practicality, so you get the best of both worlds.

In its own way, luggage is like the ultimate small space design – trying to balance spaciousness, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. What have you learned about making the most of space while designing your collections?

Designing luggage is all about making the most of every inch. Features like compression systems and well-placed compartments help maximise space without losing style. Beyond just space, one of the challenges early on in our design was ensuring the cases were robust in addition to looking beautiful. July’s slightly rounded edges ensure that the corners are super strong when thrown around by baggage handlers.

There’s something about luggage that can feel so personal, almost sentimental, is this something that factors into your design process?

Absolutely luggage is personal. It carries memories of all your travels. We aim to create pieces that stand the test of time, so you can keep taking them on all your different journeys over the years.

Biggest airport pet peeve? (Luggage related or not.)

Long lines of any sort. I hate waiting in lines.

What are your favourite travel destinations? Are you the type to always travel somewhere new or do you like revisiting the places you know and love?

I love a mix of both. Discovering new destinations is always great, but some places hold a special place in my heart, and I love revisiting them for the memories and connections I've made. I’m headed to Athens for my sister's wedding soon, and I’m excited to show my kids part of their heritage for the first time. Less excited about the 24hrs of travel with three kids under 6 though.

Hotel or homestay?

Both have their own charm. Hotels give you luxury and convenience, but a homestay ensures a deeper connection to the local culture. I’m in hotels far more often than homestays, but I reckon getting the local experience can’t be beat.

Big city or countryside retreat?

I love the food scene in big cities – there's always something new and exciting to try and it’s great to walk around and soak up the vibe. If I’m with my family it's hard to beat the beach; we did a family holiday to the Gold Coast earlier this year and it was great. Is it really a holiday if you don't swim in the ocean?

What’s next for July?

We’ve been a global business since day one, so we’re focusing more of our efforts on our US expansion, and have some partnerships with really exciting brands coming down the pipeline too. Watch this space.
